New Memorial Themes Released November 19

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation appointed a 13-member jury to review more than 5,201 memorial design submissions and select a winning design. The jury consists of world renowned artists and architects, a family member, a Lower Manhattan resident and business owner, representatives of the governor and Mayor, and other leading arts and cultural professionals. The jury narrowed the submissions to eight finalists. From among these finalists, the jury will choose a winning design.

Designers: Bradley Campbell and Matthias Neumann

This entry contains an inclined park that slopes from street level to 30 feet below. It includes a garden within the south tower footprints and a structure at the north tower footprints with a water staircase and the unidentified remains of the victims. It also has a museum dedicated to the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy with access to the slurry wall and bedrock at the north tower footprints. Victims’ names are listed in alphabetical order on walls that encircle the park. Campbell is a sculptor and painter who lives in Brooklyn. He is a native of St. Paul, Minn. The German-born Neumann is co-founder of the design group Normaldesign in New York City.
